Hospital Hell: Pregnant Emily’s World Shatters When Husband’s Mistress Clara Unleashes a Furious Physical Attack in the Maternity Ward – A Nurse and David Fight to Stop the Rampage as Dark Secrets Explode in a Hallway of Shame and Tears.

CHAPTER 1: The Attack Begins

The maternity ward smelled of antiseptic and cheap coffee.
Fluorescent lights hummed overhead.
Emily cradled her swollen belly with both hands.
Her pale pink dress stretched tight over her prominent bump.
She smiled softly.
A routine checkup.

Everything was fine.
She never saw Clara coming.
The woman emerged from a side corridor like a predator.
Deep red dress.

Sharp black heels.

Eyes burning with fury.
Emily’s smile vanished.
“Clara?”
Her voice cracked.
Clara’s face twisted into something animalistic.
“You know exactly who I am.”
Her voice was a blade.
Emily stepped backward.
Her sandals squeaked on the polished floor.
“Please, not here.

I’m-”
“Pregnant?” Clara laughed.

A cold, hollow sound. “I know.”
Emily’s hands trembled.
She pressed them against her belly.
Protecting her child.
Clara took another step forward.
Her high heels clicked like a countdown.
“You destroyed my life.”
Emily shook her head.
Her dark hair swayed across her shoulders.
“It wasn’t like that.

I swear.”
Clara’s nostrils flared.
Her lips pulled back, revealing clenched teeth.
“Swear?

You swore you’d never see him again.”
Emily felt tears burn her eyes.
Her throat dried up.
“I didn’t.

I ended it.”
Clara stopped inches away.
Emily could smell her perfume.

Something floral.

Poisonous.
“Liar.”
The word hit Emily like a fist.
A nurse appeared at the end of the hallway.
She wore light blue scrubs and a matching cap.
Her name tag read “Maya.”
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Is everything okay here?”
Clara didn’t turn around.
“Stay out of this.”
Maya stepped closer.
Her voice was firm.

Professional.
“Ma’am, I need you to step back from the patient.”
Clara ignored her.
She pointed a shaking finger at Emily’s face.
“You think you can carry his child and pretend it’s your husband’s?”
Emily sobbed.
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
“It is my husband’s.”
Clara laughed again.
Louder.

Wilder.
“Keep telling yourself that.”
Maya reached for Clara’s arm.
“Ma’am, security has been called.

You need to leave.”
Clara yanked her arm away.
Her eyes never left Emily.
“I’m not done with you.”
David appeared at the opposite end of the hallway.
He wore a sharp navy suit.

A light blue dress shirt.
His hair was neatly styled.
He carried a coffee cup.
He saw Clara.
He saw Emily’s tear-streaked face.
His body went rigid.
“Emily?”
His voice was a whisper.
Then it became a shout.
“Emily!”
He dropped the coffee.
The cup exploded on the floor.
Brown liquid splattered across the white tiles.
He ran.
But Clara was faster.
She lunged forward.
Her hand shot out.
And everything turned to chaos.

Clara’s palm connected with Emily’s cheek.
The sound was sharp.

Wet.

Cruel.
Emily’s head snapped sideways.
Her dark hair flew across her face.
She stumbled.
Her hands flew to her belly.
Instinct.

Protection.
“Stop!” Maya screamed.
David’s footsteps pounded closer.
“You monster!” he yelled.
Clara didn’t stop.
She grabbed Emily’s shoulder.
Her nails dug into the pale pink fabric.
“You ruined me!”
Emily cried out.
Her voice was broken.

Desperate.
“Please, I’m pregnant!”
Clara pulled her closer.
Their faces were inches apart.
Clara’s breath was hot against Emily’s skin.
“I don’t care.”
David reached them.
He grabbed Clara’s wrist.
His grip was strong.
“Let go of her.

Now.”
Clara turned her head.
She looked at David with pure venom.
“You don’t know what she did.”
David’s jaw tightened.
“I know she’s my wife.”
Clara laughed again.
That same hollow sound.
“For now.”
Maya rushed to Emily’s side.
She wrapped her arm around Emily’s shoulders.
“Come with me.

Let’s get you to a room.”
Emily nodded.
Her cheek was red.

Swollen.
Her lip quivered.
Clara saw the movement.
She lunged again.
David blocked her.
His body became a shield.
“Get out of my way,” Clara snarled.
“No.”
Clara’s eyes blazed.
“Your precious wife spread her legs for my husband.”
David flinched.
His grip loosened for a second.
Clara felt it.
She twisted her arm free.
She shoved David hard.
He stumbled backward.
His expensive shoes skidded on the wet floor.
Clara turned back to Emily.
Maya tried to pull Emily away.
But Clara was too fast.
She grabbed a fistful of Emily’s dark hair.
She yanked.
Emily screamed.
A raw.

Primal sound.
Her body twisted.
Her belly lurched forward.
Pain shot through her abdomen.
“Let go!” Maya shouted.
She grabbed Clara’s arm.
Clara shook her off.
“Get your hands off me!”
David recovered.
He ran forward.
He grabbed Clara’s wrist again.
This time, he twisted.
Hard.
Clara gasped.
Her fingers released Emily’s hair.
Emily staggered backward.
Her hands pressed against the wall.
Her breath came in ragged gasps.
Her baby kicked.
Hard.
Emily sobbed.
“Please, stop.”
Clara’s chest heaved.
Her red dress was wrinkled.
Her perfect hair was disheveled.
She pointed at Emily.
“This isn’t over.”
David stood between them.
His body was tense.
His fists were clenched.
“You need to leave.”
Clara smiled.
It was a terrible smile.
“I’ll leave.

But she knows the truth.”
She turned to Emily.
“Your baby.

Your marriage.

Your precious little life.”
She spat the words.
“It’s all built on a lie.”
Emily slid down the wall.
Her legs gave out.
She landed on the floor.
Her pink dress pooled around her.
Maya knelt beside her.
“It’s okay.

You’re safe now.”
But Emily didn’t feel safe.
She felt Clara’s fingers in her hair.
She felt the sting of the slap.
She felt the weight of her sin.
David crouched in front of her.
His eyes were wet.
“Emily.

Look at me.”
She raised her head.
Her eyes met his.
Tears streamed down her face.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I’m sorry.”
David’s throat tightened.
He didn’t know what to say.
He reached out.
His hand touched her cheek.
The red mark was already darkening.
“Let’s get you checked.”
Emily shook her head.
“She’s right.”
David froze.
“What?”
Emily’s voice broke.
“Everything she said.

It’s true.”
David’s hand dropped.
His face went pale.
The fluorescent lights hummed.
A door opened somewhere.
A doctor’s voice called out.
But David didn’t hear any of it.
He only heard his wife’s confession.
And the sound of his world shattering.

‘Clara’s voice echoed through the sterile hallway.
“She spread her legs for my husband.”
The words hung in the air like smoke.
Emily pressed her back against the cold wall.
Her fingers clutched her belly.
“No.

That’s not what happened.”
Clara stepped closer.
Her red dress swayed with each movement.
“You met him at The Rusty Anchor six months ago.”
Emily’s face went pale.
Her lips parted.
Clara continued.
“You wore a black dress.

Too short.

Too tight.”
Emily’s breath caught.
“He told you that?”
Clara laughed.
A bitter, broken sound.
“He told me everything.

After I found the hotel receipt.”
David stood frozen.
His hands hung at his sides.
His knuckles were white.
“Emily.

What is she talking about?”
Emily couldn’t meet his eyes.
Her gaze stayed fixed on the floor.
Clara’s voice grew louder.
“You called him at midnight.

You texted him pictures.”
Emily shook her head.
Tears splattered on the white tiles.
“It was a mistake.

One time.”
Clara’s face contorted.
“One time?

You think that makes it better?”
She pointed at Emily’s belly.
“Is that even your husband’s baby?”
Emily gasped.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Yes.

It’s David’s.

I swear.”
Clara’s eyes narrowed.
“You swore before.

Remember?”
Emily sobbed.
Her shoulders shook.
The baby kicked again.
Harder this time.
Clara took another step.
Her high heels clicked like a heartbeat.
“You destroyed my marriage.

My children.

My life.”
Emily looked up.
Her eyes were red and swollen.
“I ended it.

I told him I couldn’t see him anymore.”
Clara’s voice cracked.
“But he couldn’t forget you.

He still calls your name at night.”
David’s face went white.
His jaw tightened.
His hands curled into fists.
“Get away from her.”
Clara turned to him.
Her eyes were wild.
“You defend her?

After what she did?”
David’s voice was low.
“She’s my wife.

She’s carrying my child.”
Clara laughed.
“Or his child.”
David’s body went rigid.
His mouth opened.
No words came out.
Clara pressed harder.
“Did you know she was at a hotel?

Did she tell you about the bar?”
David looked at Emily.
His eyes were pleading.
“Emily.

Please tell me this is a lie.”
Emily’s lips trembled.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“I’m sorry.

I’m so sorry.”
David stumbled backward.
His shoulder hit the wall.
His chest heaved.
Clara watched him crumble.
A cruel smile spread across her face.
“Now you know the truth.”

David’s hands shook.
His suit jacket felt too tight.
His collar choked him.
“Six months ago?”
Emily nodded.
Her hair fell across her face.
“You were working late.

I was lonely.”
David’s voice cracked.
“Lonely?

We were trying for a baby.”
Emily sobbed.
“I know.

I know.”
Clara folded her arms.
Her red dress glistened under the fluorescent lights.
“She chose my husband over yours.”
David’s eyes snapped to Clara.
“Get out.

Now.”
Clara didn’t move.
“Make me.”
David’s fists clenched.
His veins bulged in his neck.
The nurse, Maya, stepped between them.
“Security is almost here.

Please leave.”
Clara ignored her.
She stared at Emily.
“I hope your baby looks like him.”
Emily cried out.
A raw, wounded sound.
David lunged forward.
Maya grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.

She’s not worth it.”
David stopped.
His breath came in ragged gasps.
His body trembled.
Clara smiled.
“Good boy.”
Maya’s voice was sharp.
“That’s enough.”
Clara turned to leave.
Then stopped.
She looked over her shoulder.
“One more thing.”
Emily held her breath.
Clara’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“I know you’re still lying.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Clara pointed at her belly.
“That baby.

It’s not David’s.”
David’s face lost all color.
His legs felt weak.
Emily screamed.
“It is!

I swear it is!”
Clara laughed.
Her laughter echoed through the hallway.
“Ask him.

Ask my husband.”
Emily’s hands covered her face.
Her body wracked with sobs.
David stood frozen.
His mind raced.
He thought about the late nights.
The missed calls.
The excuses.
The guilt in Emily’s eyes.
He thought about the baby.
His baby.
Was it?
Clara’s heels clicked as she walked away.
Her voice carried back.
“Your whole life is a lie, Emily.”
Emily collapsed.
Her knees hit the floor.
Her hands flew to her belly.
She screamed.
A sound of pure agony.
David didn’t move.
He stared at the wall.
His hands hung limp at his sides.
Maya knelt beside Emily.
“It’s okay.

Breathe.”
Emily shook her head.
“I can’t.

I can’t.”
Maya looked up at David.
“Sir.

Your wife needs you.”
David blinked.
His eyes were hollow.
He looked at Emily.
His wife.
The woman he loved.
The woman who betrayed him.
He took a step forward.
Then stopped.
Emily looked up.
Her eyes met his.
“David.

Please.”
Her voice broke.
“I love you.”
David’s throat tightened.
His eyes burned.
He didn’t know what to say.
He didn’t know what to feel.
He only knew one thing.
Nothing would ever be the same.

CHAPTER 2: The Nurse Pleads

‘Maya scrambled to her feet.
Her scrub cap slipped sideways.
She planted herself between Clara and Emily.
“Ma’am.

You need to stop.

Now.”
Clara’s eyes flickered with amusement.
“Get out of my way.”
Her voice was flat.

Cold.
Maya held up her hands.
“This is a maternity ward.

There are pregnant women here.

Children.”
Her voice shook, but she didn’t step back.
Clara tilted her head.
“I know exactly where I am.”
She pointed at Emily, who was still on her knees, sobbing.
“That whore doesn’t deserve to be here.”
Maya’s throat tightened.
“Please.

She’s under stress.

The baby-”
“I don’t care about her baby.”
Clara’s words cut like glass.
David moved.

His legs were stiff.
He grabbed Maya’s arm.
“Don’t.

She’ll hurt you.”
Maya shook him off.
“I’m not letting her touch Emily again.”
Clara laughed.
A hollow, broken sound.
“Touch her?

I’m just getting started.”
She lunged forward.
Her shoulder slammed into Maya’s chest.
Maya gasped.
Her feet slid on the polished floor.
She stumbled sideways, crashing into a metal cart.
IV bags clattered.
Alcohol wipes scattered across the tiles.
Maya hit the ground.
Her elbow cracked against the floor.
She cried out.
Clara didn’t look back.
She stepped over the fallen nurse.
Her red dress brushed against Maya’s face.
“Stay down.

This isn’t your fight.”
Emily screamed.
“No!

Please!”
Her hands pressed against her belly.
The baby kicked.

Hard.
David rushed forward.
His suit jacket flared.
“Clara!

Back off!”
His voice boomed through the hallway.
Clara ignored him.
She stopped two feet from Emily.
Her shadow fell over the pregnant woman.
“You think crying will save you?”
Emily shook her head.
Tears and mascara ran down her cheeks.
Clara bent down.
Her face inches from Emily’s.
“I told you I’d ruin you.”
Emily’s breath came in short gasps.
“I’m sorry.

I’m so sorry.”
Clara’s hand shot out.
She grabbed a fistful of Emily’s dark brown hair.
Emily shrieked.
Her scalp burned.
She tried to pull back, but Clara’s grip was iron.
David yelled.
“Let her go!”
He grabbed Clara’s wrist.
His fingers dug into her skin.
“I said let her go.”
Clara didn’t release.
She twisted Emily’s hair.
Emily’s head snapped back.
Her neck arched.
She gasped for air.
Maya scrambled to her feet.
Her elbow throbbed.
She pressed the emergency button on her pager.
“Security!

Hallway C! Code Silver!”
Her voice echoed.
Clara yanked harder.
Emily’s body jerked forward.
Her knees scraped the floor.
She cried out in pain.
“David!

David!”
Her voice was raw.
David’s face twisted with rage.
He pulled Clara’s arm.
“You’re hurting her!

Stop!”
Clara’s eyes were wild.
“She deserves worse.”
She twisted Emily’s hair again.
A sickening crack.
Emily screamed.
David’s vision blurred.
He slammed his palm against Clara’s elbow.
Her arm buckled.
She let go.
Emily collapsed forward.
Her forehead hit the floor.
David shoved Clara backward.
She stumbled.
Her heels skidded.
She caught herself against the wall.
Her chest heaved.
Her red dress was wrinkled.
Her lipstick smeared.
“You’ll regret that.”
Her voice was low.

Dangerous.
David didn’t answer.
He dropped to his knees beside Emily.
His hands hovered over her shoulders.
“Emily.

Emily, look at me.”
She lifted her head.
Blood dripped from her lip.
A thin red line.
Maya appeared beside them.
Her pager beeped.
“Security is on the way.

Hold on.”
She pressed a tissue to Emily’s lip.
Emily flinched.
Clara straightened her dress.
She smoothed her hair.
“This isn’t over.”
Her eyes locked on Emily.
“You’ll pay for every tear I’ve cried.”
David stood up.
His fists clenched.
His jaw tight.
“Get out.

Before I call the police.”
Clara smiled.
“I’ll leave.

But I’ll be back.”
She turned.
Her heels clicked slowly.
She stopped at the end of the hallway.
“Tell your husband hi for me.”
She laughed.
The sound faded as she disappeared around the corner.
Emily’s body shook.
She grabbed David’s hand.
Her fingers were cold.
“I’m sorry.

I’m so sorry.”
David looked down at her.
His eyes were empty.
“Just breathe.”
He didn’t say I love you.

The hallway fell silent.
Maya helped Emily sit up.
“You’re okay.

You’re okay.”
Emily’s hand rested on her belly.
“The baby.

Is the baby okay?”
Maya pressed a stethoscope to Emily’s abdomen.
“Heartbeat is strong.

You need to stay calm.”
David stood a few feet away.
His back was to them.
He stared at the wall.
His shoulders rose and fell.
Slow.

Heavy.
Emily reached for him.
“David.

Please look at me.”
He didn’t turn.
His hands were shaking.
He stuffed them in his pockets.
Maya whispered.
“Sir.

She needs you.”
David’s voice was hollow.
“I need a minute.”
Emily’s lip quivered.
“I know you’re angry.

I deserve it.”
David turned.
His face was pale.
“Angry?

Emily, you slept with another man.”
His voice cracked.
“You lied to me.

You let me think… this was our baby.”
Emily cried out.
“It is your baby!

I swear it!”
David’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why did Clara say that?”
Emily shook her head.
“She’s lying.

She’s trying to hurt me.”
David took a step closer.
“She knew the bar.

The hotel.

The black dress.”
Emily’s breath caught.
“I told you.

It was one time.

One mistake.”
David’s jaw tightened.
“One mistake that we’ll never forget.”
He turned away again.
Maya checked Emily’s vitals.
Blood pressure.

Pulse.
“We need to get you to a room.

Rest.”
She helped Emily stand.
Emily wobbled.
Her legs were weak.
Suddenly, footsteps.
Fast.

Sharp.
Clara appeared again.
She had circled back.
Her face was twisted with fury.
“I forgot something.”
She charged.
David spun around.
“No!”
He reached for Clara.
But she was faster.
She grabbed Emily’s hair again.
This time with both hands.
She yanked backward.
Emily’s body arched.
Her arms flailed.
She screamed.
Her feet left the ground.
She fell backward.
Her head hit the floor with a wet thud.
David lunged.
He grabbed Clara’s shoulders.
He threw her off.
She crashed into a vending machine.
Glass shattered.
Soda cans exploded.
Foam sprayed everywhere.
Emily lay on the floor.
Her eyes were closed.
Her lips moved.
Whispering.
“Baby.

Baby.”
Maya dropped to her knees.
“Emily!

Stay with me!”
She rolled Emily onto her side.
Her fingers found Emily’s pulse.
Weak.

Racing.
David stood over Clara.
His chest heaved.
“Get up.”
Clara didn’t move.
Blood trickled from her forehead.
A shard of glass was embedded in her palm.
She looked at it.
Laughed.
“I told you.

I’d ruin her.”
David grabbed her collar.
He pulled her up.
Her red dress tore.
“Security is coming.

You’re done.”
Clara spat at him.
Saliva hit his cheek.
He didn’t flinch.
Maya yelled.
“Sir!

Emily is bleeding!”
David dropped Clara.
He ran to his wife.
Her head was cradled in Maya’s lap.
A red stain spread on the maternity dress.
Between her legs.
David’s face went gray.
“No.

No, no, no.”
He took her hand.
It was limp.
His voice broke.
“Emily.

Open your eyes.”
She didn’t respond.
Maya’s pager screamed.
“C-section team!

Stat!”
Orderlies appeared.
A stretcher.
Fluorescent lights flashed overhead.
David was pushed aside.
He stood in the hallway.
His suit was stained.
His hands were bloody.
Clara was on her knees, laughing.
The sound echoed.
A cry of victory.
A scream of madness.
David looked at her.
His voice was a whisper.
“If she loses that baby…”
Clara smiled.
“Then we’re even.”

‘The stretcher rattled down the hallway.
David stood frozen.
His hands hung at his sides.
Blood stained his navy blue suit.
Clara rose from the floor.
Glass crunched under her heels.
She smoothed her torn red dress.
Her eyes followed the stretcher.
“I’m not done.”
Her voice was a low growl.
David snapped his head toward her.
“You’ve done enough.”
Clara stepped forward.
Her shadow stretched toward the elevator.
The stretcher disappeared behind closing doors.
Emily’s scream echoed from inside.
“David!

David!”
The doors sealed.
Silence.
Clara laughed.
A dry, bitter sound.
“She’ll lose it.

I can feel it.”
David’s chest tightened.
His breath came in short bursts.
He moved.
His legs carried him toward Clara.
She didn’t flinch.
He stopped inches from her face.
“If she loses that baby, I will kill you.”
Clara smiled.
Her teeth were red.
“You’d go to prison.

And then who would raise your bastard?”
David’s hand shot out.
He grabbed her wrist.
His fingers pressed into her skin.
Hard.
Clara’s smile vanished.
“Let go.”
He didn’t.
He twisted her arm.
She gasped.
Her body bent sideways.
“You will stay here.”
His voice was steel.
“You will not follow her.”
Clara struggled.
Her heels scraped the floor.
“You think you can stop me?”
David pulled her closer.
His face was inches from hers.
“I will break your arm.”
Her eyes widened.
She saw the truth in his glare.
“Security is coming.”
Clara spat.
Saliva landed on his cheek.
He didn’t wipe it off.
“They can arrest me.

But I’ll still be here.”
She twisted her wrist.
Tried to break free.
David held tighter.
His knuckles were white.
“You’re hurting me.”
“Good.”
He pushed her backward.
She stumbled.
Her back hit the vending machine.
Broken glass clattered.
David released her wrist.
She cradled it.
Her palm bled from the glass shard.
“You’re just like her.

A monster.”
David stepped back.
His chest heaved.
Sweat dripped down his temple.
“I’m protecting my family.”
Clara laughed again.
Hoarse.

Broken.
“Your family?

That baby might not even be yours.”
David’s jaw tightened.
His hands shook.
He didn’t answer.
Clara leaned forward.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“She told me.

The bar.

The hotel.

You were out of town.”
David’s eyes glazed.
He remembered.
That weekend.
Business trip.
Emily said she missed him.
Clara’s words cut deeper.
“She wore a black dress.

Drank whiskey.

He said she was easy.”
David’s throat tightened.
He couldn’t speak.
Clara stepped closer.
Her breath was hot.
“You don’t know her.

Not really.”
David’s hand moved.
He grabbed her shoulder.
Pushed her back.
“Shut up.”
Clara’s eyes brightened.
“Hit me.

Do it.

Then you’ll be just like her.”
David’s arm trembled.
He stopped.
His palm hovered.
Maya’s voice echoed from down the hall.
“Security is coming!

Get away from her!”
David didn’t move.
Clara stared at him.
“You won’t do it.

You’re weak.”
David lowered his hand.
His fingers uncurled.
He took a step back.
“Go.”
Clara tilted her head.
“Not until I see her fall.”
She turned.
Walked toward the elevator.
Her heels clicked slowly.
David watched her.
His legs felt hollow.
She pressed the button.
The elevator doors opened.
She stepped inside.
Turned.
“Tell her the truth is coming for her.”
The doors slid shut.
David stood alone.
The hallway was empty.
His suit was ruined.
His hands were red.
He pressed his palms against his eyes.
A sob escaped.
Low.

Broken.
He heard footsteps.
Maya ran toward him.
“Sir.

Mr. Harrison.

Emily is in surgery.”
He looked up.
His face was pale.
“Is she alive?”
Maya nodded.
“They’re trying to save the baby.”
David wiped his eyes.
“I need to see her.”
Maya took his arm.
“Come.

I’ll take you to the waiting room.”
He followed.
His steps were heavy.
The floor stretched long.
He didn’t look back.

The elevator chimed.
Doors opened.
Clara stepped into the main lobby.
Patients stared.
A woman held her child closer.
Clara’s dress was torn.
Blood dripped from her palm.
She didn’t care.
She walked toward the exit.
The glass doors reflected her image.
Mascara smeared.
Hair wild.
She smiled.
Two security guards rounded the corner.
They spotted her.
“Ma’am.

Stop.”
Clara paused.
Turned slowly.
Her smile widened.
“Yes?”
The first guard approached.
Cautious.
“We received a report of an assault in the maternity ward.”
Clara tilted her head.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The guard studied her.
The blood.
The torn dress.
“We need you to come with us.”
Clara laughed.
“I’m leaving.”
She turned back to the doors.
The guard grabbed her elbow.
Clara spun.
Her eyes flashed.
“Don’t touch me.”
Her voice was sharp.
Loud.
People stopped.
Heads turned.
The second guard stepped in.
“Ma’am, you need to cooperate.”
Clara yanked her arm free.
“I’ll cooperate when hell freezes.”
She pointed toward the maternity ward.
“That whore in there?

She ruined my life.”
Guards exchanged glances.
First guard spoke again.
“Ma’am, we have witnesses.

You assaulted a pregnant woman.”
Clara’s face twisted.
“She deserved it.”
She raised her voice.
“She slept with my husband!”
The lobby went silent.
A child started crying.
Clara pointed at her own belly.
“I was pregnant too.

I lost it.

Because of her.”
Her voice cracked.
Tears streamed.
But they weren’t real.
They were tools.
The guards hesitated.
Clara stepped closer to them.
“She broke my family.

And now she’s going to lose hers.”
She smiled.
Spit flew.
“That baby?

It might not even be her boyfriend’s.

She’s a liar.

A cheat.”
The first guard’s jaw tightened.
“Ma’am, you need to come with us.”
Clara backed away.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
She cupped her hands around her mouth.
Screamed toward the ceiling.
“EMILY!

I HOPE YOUR BABY DIES!”
Her voice echoed.
Bounced off marble.
Hit the windows.
A nurse at the front desk gasped.
A doctor rushed out.
“Security!

Remove her!”
Clara turned.
Ran for the door.
Guards chased.
She slammed into the glass.
Pushed it open.
Cold air hit her face.
She ran into the parking lot.
Her heels clicked on asphalt.
She turned back.
Saw the hospital.
Saw the third floor.
That was the maternity ward.
She raised her bloody palm.
Waved.
“This isn’t over, Emily.”
Guards tackled her from behind.
She hit the ground.
Her face scraped pavement.
Her dress ripped.
She laughed.
“She’ll pay!

She’ll pay!”
They cuffed her.
Dragged her up.
Her knees bled.
She twisted her head.
Looked at the hospital one last time.
“I’ll be out by morning.

And then I’ll finish the job.”
A guard shoved her into a patrol car.
The door slammed.
She sat in the back.
Hair a mess.
Blood on her lips.
She whispered to herself.
“You took everything from me.”
She closed her eyes.
Smiled.
“Now I’ll take everything from you.”
Inside the hospital.
The lobby was in chaos.
Patients whispered.
A child asked her mother.
“Mommy, why was that lady so angry?”
The mother pulled her close.
“Don’t look, baby.

Don’t look.”
A security guard walked back inside.
His radio crackled.
“Suspect in custody.

Repeat.

Suspect in custody.”
He looked at the front desk nurse.
“Where’s the victim?”
Nurse pointed up.
“Third floor.

Surgery.”
The guard nodded.
“Her boyfriend?”
“Waiting room.”
The guard walked toward the elevators.
The doors opened.
David stood inside.
His eyes were red.
His suit was stained.
“I heard screaming.”
The guard swallowed.
“We have her.

She’s in custody.”
David stepped out.
Walked past the guard.
“That doesn’t bring my baby back.”
He stopped.
Turned.
“She said something about Emily’s baby.”
The guard nodded.
“She made threats.”
David’s face hardened.
“I want her charged.

Everything.”
He walked toward the waiting room.
A plastic chair.
A stack of magazines.
He sat.
Stared at the wall.
His hands trembled.
He pulled out his phone.
Scrolled to Emily’s name.
Typed one word.
“Why?”
He didn’t send it.
He locked the phone.
Slid it into his pocket.
The waiting room clock ticked.
Minutes passed.
Hours.
The door opened.
A doctor entered.
David stood.
The doctor’s face was unreadable.
“Mr. Harrison.”
David’s mouth went dry.
“The baby?”
Doctor paused.
“The baby is alive.”

CHAPTER 3: Security Escorts Clara

‘The lobby erupted.
Clara twisted in the guards’ grip.
Her heels scraped the pavement.
“Let me go!”
Her voice tore through the cold air.
The first guard tightened his hold.
“Ma’am, stop resisting.”
Clara lunged forward.
Her elbow caught his ribs.
He grunted.
She spun.
Her hand shot out.
Fingernails raked his cheek.
Blood beaded.
“Emily!

I’ll find you!

I’ll find your baby!”
Her words echoed across the parking lot.
A mother covered her child’s ears.
An old man dropped his coffee.
The second guard grabbed her waist.
Lifted her off the ground.
Her legs kicked.
Her red dress rode up.
“You think you can lock me up?

She’s the criminal!”
The first guard wiped his cheek.
His hand came away red.
He grabbed her arm.
Twisted it behind her back.
Clara screamed.
“You’re hurting me!

I’ll sue!”
The second guard shoved her toward the patrol car.
The door was open.
The back seat smelled of stale cigarettes.
She planted her feet.
Refused to enter.
“I’m not getting in that car!”
The first guard pushed her shoulders.
She stumbled.
Her forehead hit the doorframe.
Blood trickled.
She laughed.
“Her blood will be on your hands too.”
A crowd gathered near the entrance.
Phones were raised.
Videos recorded.
Clara turned her head.
Looked directly at a woman filming.
“See this?

See what they do to victims?”
The woman lowered her phone.
Her face pale.
The second guard grabbed Clara’s hair.
Forced her head down.
“Get in the car.”
She spat.
Saliva landed on his uniform.
“You’ll regret this.”
She twisted.
Her body went limp.
They shoved her inside.
The door slammed.
Her hands were cuffed behind her back.
She pressed her face against the window.
Her breath fogged the glass.
She whispered.
“Emily.

You’re dead.”
Inside the hospital lobby.
David stood at the window.
He watched the patrol car.
Its lights flashed.
Red.

Blue.

Red.
The car pulled away.
He didn’t move.
His hands were fists.
His knuckles white.
The nurse from the front desk approached.
“Sir?

Mr. Harrison?”
He blinked.
“Yes.”
“Your girlfriend is out of surgery.

You can see her now.”
David swallowed.
His throat was dry.
“Is she awake?”
“Yes.

But she’s very weak.”
He nodded.
Followed the nurse.
His steps were heavy.
The elevator ride was silent.
The doors opened.
The maternity ward smelled of antiseptic.
He walked down the hallway.
Room 312.
The door was slightly open.
He pushed it.
Emily lay in the bed.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes closed.
A bandage covered her arm.
Her belly rose and fell.
Slow.
Fragile.
He stepped inside.
The door clicked shut.
Emily’s eyes opened.
She saw him.
Tears formed.
“David.”
Her voice was a whisper.
He crossed the room.
Sat beside her.
Took her hand.
“Shh.

Rest.”
She gripped his fingers.
“Is Clara…”
“She’s gone.

Arrested.”
Emily’s chest heaved.
A sob escaped.
“She said… she said my baby…”
David shook his head.
“The baby is alive.

You’re both alive.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Her shoulders shook.
“David, I’m so sorry.”
He didn’t answer.
He just held her hand.
The room was quiet.
The machines beeped.
The clock ticked.
Outside, the world kept moving.
But inside that room, everything had changed.

David sat for ten minutes.
Silent.
Emily’s eyes remained closed.
He watched her chest rise.
Fall.
Rise.
Fall.
Then her hand twitched.
She turned her head.
Opened her eyes.
“Where’s my baby?”
Her voice cracked.
David squeezed her hand.
“In your belly.

Safe.”
Emily touched her stomach.
Her fingers trembled.
“Is she okay?

The doctor said… stress could harm…”
David nodded.
“The doctor said you need rest.

No stress.”
Emily laughed.
A broken sound.
“Rest?

How can I rest when that woman…”
She stopped.
Her face crumpled.
“David, I’m so sorry.”
Her body shook.
Tears spilled.
Her back arched.
She tried to sit up.
The IV tugged.
The monitors beeped faster.
“Emily, lie down.”
“No!”
She swung her legs off the bed.
Her feet hit the cold floor.
She stood.
Her knees buckled.
David caught her.
“Please.

Sit.”
She pushed him away.
Stumbled toward the window.
Her hand gripped the sill.
Her forehead pressed against the glass.
“She said she would kill my baby.”
Her voice was hollow.
“She said the truth is coming.”
David stepped behind her.
His hands hovered.
Unsure.
“Emily.

Come back to bed.”
She turned.
Her eyes were red.
Swollen.
Puffy.
“I can’t.

I can’t breathe.”
Her chest heaved.
Her breath came in gasps.
Her knees gave.
She slid down the window.
Hit the floor.
Her legs splayed.
Her maternity dress bunched.
She wrapped her arms around her belly.
Rocked.
“She’s right.

I’m a monster.”
David knelt.
His suit brushed the floor.
“Don’t say that.”
Emily looked up.
Her face was wet.
Her nose ran.
“I slept with her husband, David.”
The words hung.
Heavy.
Final.
David’s jaw tightened.
His hands rested on his knees.
“I know.”
Emily cried harder.
Her body hunched.
She pressed her forehead to the carpet.
“I was drunk.

I was lonely.

You were gone.”
David’s throat closed.
He didn’t speak.
Emily continued.
“He bought me drinks.

He said I was beautiful.”
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know he was married until after.

He showed me a picture of his wife.”
She sobbed.
“It was Clara.”
David’s hands shook.
He stared at the floor.
“There’s no excuse.”
Emily lifted her head.
Her face was streaked with tears.
“I know.

I know.”
She crawled toward him.
Her knees scraped the carpet.
She reached for his hand.
He pulled away.
Emily froze.
“David.

Please.”
He stood.
His back to her.
His voice was low.
“You lied to me for months.”
Emily clutched her belly.
“The baby… I thought… if you knew…”
“You thought I would leave.”
“Yes.”
David turned.
His eyes were wet.
He wiped them with his sleeve.
“You think I can leave now?

Now that she’s threatened our child?”
Emily whimpered.
“Are you staying for the baby?”
David didn’t answer.
He walked to the bed.
Sat on the edge.
His head hung.
Emily stayed on the floor.
Her sobs quieted.
The room was still.
The machines beeped.
A nurse knocked.
Entered.
“Miss Garcia?

You need to get back in bed.”
Emily didn’t move.
The nurse looked at David.
He nodded.
The nurse approached.
Kneeled.
“Your vitals are unstable.

Please.”
Emily allowed herself to be guided.
She climbed back into bed.
The nurse adjusted the IV.
Checked the monitors.
“You need to stay calm.

For the baby.”
Emily laughed.
A hollow sound.
“Calm.”
She closed her eyes.
Tears leaked from the corners.
David stood.
Walked to the window.
Stared at the parking lot.
The patrol car was gone.
Clara was gone.
But her words remained.
The truth is coming.
He pressed his palm against the glass.
Felt the cold.
His reflection stared back.
A stranger.
Behind him, Emily wept.
Her body curled.
Her hand on her belly.
She whispered.
“Please don’t leave me.”
David didn’t answer.
The silence was louder than her screams.

‘David stood at the window for another minute.
His reflection stared back.
A stranger.
Behind him, Emily’s sobs filled the room.
Her body curled on the bed.
The nurse lingered near the door.
“Mr. Harrison?

She needs rest.”
David didn’t turn.
“Leave us.”
The nurse hesitated.
Her eyes darted between them.
She stepped out.
The door clicked shut.
David turned.
Emily’s face was buried in the pillow.
Her shoulders shook.
Her hand still pressed her belly.
He crossed the room.
His footsteps were soft on the tile.
His knees hit the floor beside the bed.
He reached out.
His fingers touched her arm.
She flinched.
“Don’t.

You hate me.”
David’s throat tightened.
“I don’t hate you.”
Emily turned her head.
Her eyes were red, swollen.
Her nose was raw.
“You should.”
David swallowed.
He rested his hand on her arm.
His palm felt her trembling.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily’s breath hitched.
“For what?”
“For freezing.

For not holding you.”
He moved closer.
His forehead touched her shoulder.
“I should have caught you.

I should have blocked her.”
Emily let out a wet laugh.
“You can’t block the truth.”
David’s voice cracked.
“I don’t care about truth right now.

I care about you.

And our baby.”
Emily’s body went still.
She turned fully.
Faced him.
He lifted his head.
Their eyes met.
“You still call it our baby?”
David’s jaw tightened.
“It’s ours.

No matter what happened.”
Emily reached out.
Her fingers touched his cheek.
He leaned into her palm.
She felt his stubble.
His warmth.
“I’m so sorry, David.

I ruined everything.”
He shook his head.
“We’ll figure it out.

But first, you need to breathe.”
He shifted.
Slid onto the bed beside her.
His arm wrapped around her shoulders.
She fell into his chest.
Her body shook against him.
He held her.
His hand cradled the back of her head.
“I’ve got you.”
Emily sobbed.
Her tears soaked his shirt.
“I was so scared.

When she grabbed me.

When she said she’d kill our baby.”
David tightened his grip.
“She’s gone.

She can’t hurt you now.”
Emily pulled back.
Looked at him.
Her face was pale.
“But the truth is still here.

You know now.

You know what I did.”
David’s eyes glistened.
“I know.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
He paused.
The silence stretched.
Emily’s breath held.
Then David spoke.
“I don’t know.

But I won’t leave you alone in this.”
Emily’s face crumpled.
She buried her face in his chest.
He rocked her.
Slow.
Gentle.
The room was quiet.
Only her muffled cries.
The clock ticked.
The machines beeped.
David’s hand traced her back.
He whispered.
“Shh.

We’ll get through this.”
She clutched his shirt.
“Promise?”
He closed his eyes.
“I promise.”
But his voice was hollow.
Emily didn’t notice.
She was too lost in her grief.
And David stared at the ceiling.
Wondering if his promise was a lie.

A soft knock.
The door opened.
The nurse stepped in.
Her scrubs were crisp.
Her cap slightly askew.
She carried a blood pressure cuff.
A stethoscope around her neck.
“Miss Garcia?

I need to check your vitals.”
Emily didn’t move.
Her face was still pressed against David’s chest.
David shifted.
“Can you give us a minute?”
The nurse shook her head.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Harrison.

Her heart rate was elevated earlier.

I need to monitor her.”
David nodded.
He gently pulled away.
Emily’s hand grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go.”
“I’m not going anywhere.

Just letting her do her job.”
The nurse approached.
She placed the cuff on Emily’s arm.
Pumped it.
Emily winced.
The nurse watched the gauge.
“Your blood pressure is still high.

I need to check the baby’s heartbeat.”
Emily’s hand flew to her belly.
“Is something wrong?”
The nurse’s voice was calm.
“I just want to be sure.

Please lie back.”
Emily obeyed.
Her body sank into the mattress.
Her eyes stayed on David.
He took her hand.
The nurse lifted Emily’s maternity dress.
Exposed her belly.
The skin was pale.
Stretched tight.
The nurse squeezed cold gel onto the abdomen.
Emily shivered.
The nurse pressed the Doppler against her skin.
Static filled the room.
Then a fast, rhythmic thumping.
Whoosh.

Whoosh.

Whoosh.
The nurse smiled.
“Strong heartbeat.

One-forty beats per minute.

Perfect.”
Emily’s breath escaped.
Tears rolled.
“Thank God.”
The nurse wiped the gel away.
Pulled down the dress.
“You need to stay in bed for the next twenty-four hours.

No walking.

No stress.”
Emily laughed.
A bitter sound.
“No stress.

Right.”
The nurse’s face hardened.
“I’m serious, Miss Garcia.

Adrenaline from extreme stress can trigger preterm labor.

Your body is in fight-or-flight mode.”
David leaned forward.
“What can we do?”
The nurse looked at him.
“Keep her calm.

No visitors except you.

No phone calls.

Dim lights.

Soft music.

Let her sleep.”
Emily’s lip trembled.
“Will she be okay?

The baby?”
The nurse nodded.
“For now.

But if your blood pressure doesn’t stabilize, we’ll need to admit you for observation.”
Emily’s hand tightened on David’s.
“I don’t want to stay here.”
The nurse’s voice softened.
“I know.

But we need to prioritize the baby.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Her shoulders sagged.
“Okay.”
The nurse checked the IV drip.
Adjusted the flow.
“I’ll be back in an hour.

Press the call button if you feel any pain, any cramping, or any contractions.”
She turned to leave.
At the door, she paused.
“Mr. Harrison?

Can I speak with you outside?”
David looked at Emily.
She nodded.
He released her hand.
Followed the nurse into the hallway.
The door swung shut.
The nurse lowered her voice.
“Her stress levels are dangerously high.

I saw the videos.

That woman in the parking lot.

The threats.”
David crossed his arms.
“She’s gone.

Arrested.”
The nurse shook her head.
“That doesn’t erase the trauma.

Your girlfriend is fragile.

If she has another panic attack, we might need to sedate her.”
David’s eyes widened.
“Is that safe for the baby?”
The nurse sighed.
“It’s a risk.

But a panic attack is riskier.

So please, keep her calm.”
David nodded.
“I will.”
The nurse walked away.
Her footsteps echoed.
David stood in the hallway.
His hands shook.
He stared at the door.
Behind it, Emily lay broken.
And he had to pretend everything was fine.
He pushed the door open.
Walked back in.
Emily’s eyes were closed.
But her chest rose and fell quickly.
He sat beside her.
Took her hand.
“I’m here.”
She didn’t answer.
But her fingers curled around his.
And the machines beeped on.

CHAPTER 4: The Truth Unfolds

‘David walked back to the bedside.
His hands were cold.
His throat dry.
Emily’s eyes were still closed.
But her breathing quickened.
She sensed him.
“What did the nurse say?”
David sat.
His weight sank the mattress.
“She said you need rest.

No stress.”
Emily opened her eyes.
“That’s impossible now.”
David stared at the wall.
The white paint.
The faint crack near the ceiling.
“Emily.

I need to know.”
Her body tensed.
“Know what?”
“The truth.

About Clara’s husband.”
Emily’s face went pale.
Her lips pressed together.
She looked at the window.
The gray light.
“His name is Mark.

I met him at a bar.”
David’s jaw clenched.
“When?”
“Three months ago.

You were on a business trip.”
David’s nails dug into his palms.
“You slept with him?”
Emily’s eyes filled with fresh tears.
“Yes.

Once.

I was drunk.

Lonely.”
“Lonely?

We were planning a baby.”
Her voice cracked.
“I know.

I made a terrible mistake.”
David stood up.
He paced to the door.
Turned back.
His face was red.
“A mistake?

You carry another man’s child?”
Emily shook her head violently.
“No!

The baby is yours.

I swear.

That night… I used protection.

It was one time.

The dates match.

It’s yours.”
David’s hands trembled.
He pressed them against his temples.
“How can I believe you?”
Emily reached out.
Her fingers stretched toward him.
“Because I’m begging you.

I’ve never lied about the baby.”
David stopped pacing.
He stared at her.
Her belly.
Her swollen eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
Emily’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“I was terrified.

I thought if I told you, you’d leave.

Then Clara found out.

She came to my door two weeks ago.

Screamed at me.

Said she’d destroy me.”
David’s eyes widened.
“She knew?

And you didn’t warn me?”
“I thought she’d calm down.

I blocked her number.

Changed my route to work.”
David laughed bitterly.
“And today she found you at the hospital.”
Emily nodded.
“She followed me.

I saw her car in the parking lot.”
David walked to the window.
His reflection stared back.
“You ruined everything, Emily.”
She sobbed.
“I know.

I’m sorry.”
He turned.
His eyes were wet.
“Sorry won’t fix this.

That woman wants to hurt our baby.”
Emily’s hand pressed her belly.
“I know.

I’m so scared.”
David crossed back to her.
He knelt beside the bed.
His voice was low.
“Is there anything else I should know?”
Emily hesitated.
Her lips parted.
“Mark called me.

Last week.

Said he was leaving Clara.

For me.”
David’s face hardened.
“And what did you say?”
“I told him no.

I told him I was having your baby.

I never wanted him.”
David closed his eyes.
A long breath.
“You should have told me.

The minute he called.”
Emily reached for his hand.
He let her take it.
“I was stupid.

I was ashamed.”
David opened his eyes.
He looked at their fingers.
“I don’t know what to do now.”
Emily’s tears dripped onto his knuckles.
“Please don’t leave me.

Not now.”
He didn’t answer.
The machines beeped.
The clock ticked.
The silence grew heavy.

David pulled his hand away.
He stood.
His back to her.
“I need a minute.”
Emily’s voice broke.
“David, please.”
He walked to the door.
His hand on the handle.
He paused.
“I can’t think in here.”
“Where are you going?”
“To the hall.

Just to breathe.”
He stepped out.
The door clicked shut.
He leaned against the wall.
His head dropped back.
The ceiling tiles blurred.
A nurse passed.
She glanced at him.
He ignored her.
His mind raced.
He loved Emily.
He loved the baby.
But this.
This betrayal.
It burned in his chest.
He thought of Clara’s face.
The rage.
The accusation.
“She slept with my husband.”
The words echoed.
David clenched his fists.
He wanted to punch the wall.
He wanted to scream.
Instead, he breathed.
In.

Out.
A doctor walked by.
“Sir, are you okay?”
David straightened.
“Fine.

Just… family stuff.”
The doctor nodded.
“Room 312 is quiet if you need to sit.”
David nodded back.
He didn’t move.
His phone buzzed.
A text from his mother.
“How is Emily?”
He typed a lie.
“Better.

Will update later.”
He shoved the phone in his pocket.
He turned.
Looked at the door.
He could leave.
Walk out.
Never come back.
But then he saw her face.
Her terror.
Her hand on her belly.
He saw the baby.
His baby.
He pushed the door open.
Emily was curled on her side.
Her eyes were closed.
But tears leaked from the corners.
He walked to the bed.
Sat down.
She felt the mattress shift.
Her eyes opened.
“You came back.”
David’s voice was rough.
“I told you I wouldn’t leave you alone.”
She reached for him.
He took her hand.
But his grip was loose.
His face was stone.
“I need to know one thing.”
Emily’s breath held.
“What?”
“Do you love me?

Or did you love him?”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“I love you.

Only you.

It was a moment of weakness.

I hated myself after.”
David studied her.
Minutes passed.
Her hand shook in his.
Finally, he spoke.
“I believe you.”
Emily sobbed.
“Really?”
“But trust.

That’s broken.

I don’t know how to fix it.”
Emily pulled his hand to her cheek.
“I’ll do anything.

Therapy.

Counseling.

Anything.”
David’s eyes softened.
A crack in the wall.
“We’ll try.

For the baby.”
Emily’s face crumpled.
“Thank you.”
He leaned forward.
His forehead touched hers.
“But if I ever feel like you’re hiding something again…”
“I won’t.

I promise.”
He closed his eyes.
“We have a long road ahead.”
Emily’s hand moved to her belly.
“The baby is kicking.”
David opened his eyes.
He placed his palm on her bump.
A flutter.
Then a firm push.
His breath caught.
“That’s strong.”
Emily smiled through her tears.
“She’s fighting.”
David’s lips twitched.
“She’s stubborn.

Like her mother.”
They stayed like that.
Foreheads touching.
Hands on her belly.
The machines hummed.
The world waited.
But inside the room,
A fragile truce.
A broken trust.
And a tiny heartbeat,
Pulling them together,
One pulse at a time.

‘The door opened.
A tall man in a white coat stepped in.
His name tag read: Dr. Patel.
He carried a tablet.
His eyes moved from David to Emily.
“I need to examine the patient.”
David stood.
Stepped back.
His arms crossed.
Dr. Patel approached the bed.
He checked the monitor.
Pressed a stethoscope to Emily’s belly.
Listened.
Then he straightened.
His face was serious.
“Your vitals are elevated.

Blood pressure is high.”
Emily’s hand gripped the sheet.
“Is the baby okay?”
Dr. Patel paused.
“The baby is stable.

For now.”
David stepped forward.
“What does that mean?”
Dr. Patel met his eyes.
“Your partner is under extreme stress.

Stress hormones affect the placenta.

They can trigger preterm labor.”
Emily’s breath caught.
“No.

No.

I’m only thirty-two weeks.”
Dr. Patel nodded.
“Exactly.

We need to keep you calm.

If your pressure stays this high, we may need to induce early.”
David’s jaw tightened.
“What can we do?”
“Rest.

Quiet.

No visitors.

No confrontation.”
Dr. Patel glanced at the door.
“I heard about the incident in the hall.

Security has increased patrols.

But you are not safe here long-term.”
Emily’s voice was small.
“Where should I go?”
“Home.

Once your pressure stabilizes.

But only if the environment is peaceful.”
David swallowed.
“It won’t be.

The woman who attacked her-she knows where we live.”
Dr. Patel typed on his tablet.
“Then we can arrange a transfer to another facility.

Or recommend a shelter for high-risk pregnancies.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“A shelter?”
“It’s temporary.

Until the threat is resolved.”
David walked to the window.
His reflection stared back.
“This is insane.

My pregnant wife needs protection, not hiding.”
Dr. Patel’s voice was calm.
“I understand.

But the priority is the baby’s survival.

Stress can rupture membranes.

Cause hemorrhage.

I’ve seen it.”
Emily’s lip trembled.
“What if I just stay in this room?”
“We can keep you here for forty-eight hours.

But after that, insurance requires discharge unless there’s a medical emergency.”
David turned.
“So we have two days.”
Dr. Patel nodded.
“Use them wisely.

File a police report.

Get a restraining order.

Find a safe place.”
He looked at Emily.
“Ma’am, you need to avoid all emotional triggers.

No phone calls.

No social media.

No visitors except your partner.”
Emily’s hand moved to her belly.
“What about the baby’s father?”
David’s head snapped up.
Dr. Patel blinked.
“You mean your partner?”
Emily’s face went pale.
“I mean… Clara’s husband.”
A silence.
David’s hands clenched.
Dr. Patel looked between them.
“I’m not here for personal matters.

I’m here for your health.”
He typed a note.
“I’m ordering a sedative.

A mild one.

To lower your heart rate.”
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t want drugs.”
“It’s safe for the baby.

I promise.”
David stepped beside Emily.
“Take it.

Please.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Fine.”
Dr. Patel left.
The door clicked.
The room was quiet.
Emily’s breathing was shallow.
David touched her shoulder.
“We’ll figure this out.”
Emily opened her eyes.
“Will we?

She wants to kill me, David.

And I don’t blame her.”
David’s face hardened.
“Don’t say that.”
“It’s true.

I destroyed her family.”
David’s voice was low.
“And she wants to destroy ours.”
Emily’s tears fell.
“I’m so sorry.”
David looked at the ceiling.
“Sorry won’t stop her.”
The door opened again.
A nurse entered.
A syringe in her hand.
“Time for your medication, Ms. Emily.”
Emily nodded.
Her arm trembled as the needle slid in.
She closed her eyes.
The room softened.
Her heartbeat slowed.
But the fear remained.

CHAPTER 5: The Aftermath

Two orderlies arrived.
They transferred Emily to a private room.
Third floor.
Corner unit.
No windows facing the parking lot.
David followed.
His steps heavy.
The new room was smaller.
One bed.
A single chair.
A small bathroom.
The walls were beige.
A crucifix hung above the door.
Emily settled into the bed.
Her eyes were half-closed from the sedative.
David sat in the chair.
His elbows on his knees.
His head in his hands.
The minutes passed.
A clock ticked.
The fluorescent light buzzed.
Emily’s voice was faint.
“Are you still here?”
David lifted his head.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“You should.”
David stared at her.
“Is that what you want?”
Emily turned her face away.
“I don’t know what I want.

I just know I don’t deserve you.”
David leaned forward.
“Deserve doesn’t matter right now.

What matters is that baby.”
Emily’s hand rested on her belly.
“She’s quiet now.

Usually she kicks.”
“Maybe she’s tired.”
“Maybe she’s scared.”
David’s throat tightened.
“Babies don’t feel fear.”
Emily’s lips twitched.
“They feel everything.

They know when something is wrong.”
David looked at the crucifix.
“Do you believe that?”
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.”
A knock.
A woman in a blue uniform stepped in.
A security badge.
“Mr. Carter?”
David stood.
“Yes.”
“I’m Officer Morales.

We have Clara Brennan in custody.”
Emily tensed.
“Is she still here?”
“No.

We moved her to the precinct.

She’s being charged with assault.”
David nodded.
“Will she stay?”
“She posted bail.

A friend picked her up.”
Emily gasped.
“She’s out?”
Officer Morales’s face was grim.
“Yes.

But we’ve issued a temporary restraining order.

She cannot come within five hundred feet of you.”
David’s voice cracked.
“That won’t stop her.”
“If she violates it, we arrest her immediately.

But you need to stay vigilant.”
Emily’s hands shook.
“She’s going to come back.”
Officer Morales stepped closer.
“Ma’am, do you have somewhere safe to go after discharge?”
David answered for her.
“We’re working on it.”
“I recommend a women’s shelter.

I can give you a list.”
David took the card.
“Thank you.”
Officer Morales left.
The door shut.
The room was silent.
Emily looked at David.
“I don’t want to go to a shelter.”
“You heard the doctor.

You can’t go home.”
“What about your mother’s house?”
David shook his head.
“She lives an hour away.

And she asks too many questions.”
Emily’s voice was small.
“I don’t want to be alone.”
David walked to the bed.
He sat on the edge.
Her hand reached for his.
He took it.
“You won’t be alone.”
Emily’s tears returned.
“How do you still look at me?”
David’s eyes were red.
“Because I look at our daughter.

And she has your eyes.”
Emily sobbed.
He pulled her close.
Her body shook against his chest.
The sedative made her weak.
But her grip on his shirt was strong.
He held her.
Minutes passed.
The clock ticked.
The baby kicked.
And the world outside waited.
But inside that room,
A shattered couple.
A broken trust.
And a fragile fight,
For a future neither could see.

‘The sedative haze faded.
Emily blinked.
The room came into focus.
David stood by the window.
His back to her.
His shoulders rigid.
“David?”
He didn’t turn.
“We need to talk.”
Emily’s throat tightened.
“I know.”
He turned.
His eyes were hollow.
“When did it start?”
Emily looked at her hands.
“Three months ago.”
David’s jaw clenched.
“Three months.”
He paced.
“I was working double shifts.

Trying to save for the baby.”
His voice cracked.
“And you were with him.”
“It wasn’t planned.”
“Nothing ever is.”
Emily sat up.
Her belly heavy.
Her heart pounding.
“I met him at a bar.

I was lonely.

You were always gone.”
David stopped.
“So it’s my fault?”
“No.

It’s mine.”
She pressed her palm to her forehead.
“I drank too much.

He was charming.

I made a mistake.”
David laughed.
A bitter, broken sound.
“A mistake.

You slept with a married man.

His wife attacked you in a hospital.

And you call it a mistake.”
Emily’s tears spilled.
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
He walked closer.
“Is he the father?”
Emily’s breath caught.
“What?”
David’s face was pale.
“The baby.

Is it mine?”
Emily’s hand flew to her belly.
“Yes.

She’s yours.”
David stared at her.
“Prove it.”
“How do I prove something like that?”
“We can do a paternity test.”
Emily shook her head.
“After she’s born.

But David, I swear-”
“You swore to love me.

You swore to be faithful.”
His voice broke.
“Look where that got us.”
Emily sobbed.
“I hate myself.

Every day I hate myself.”
“Then why did you keep it secret?”
“Because I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Losing you.”
David’s eyes burned.
“You already lost me.”
Emily reached for him.
He stepped back.
“Don’t.”
“Please.”
“No.”
The room spun.
Emily’s chest heaved.
“I’ll do anything.

Therapy.

Counseling.

Whatever you want.”
David’s hands shook.
“I wanted a family.

A daughter.

A future.”
His voice dropped.
“You took that from me.”
“I can give it back.”
“Can you?”
He pointed at the door.
“Clara is out there.

She wants to hurt you.

She wants to hurt our baby.”
Emily lowered her head.
“I know.”
“And her husband?

Is he coming here too?”
Emily’s voice was faint.
“I don’t know.”
David’s fists clenched.
“Did you love him?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Emily looked up.
Her face was raw.
“Because I was weak.

Because I wanted to feel wanted.”
David’s face crumbled.
“I wanted you.

Every night.

Every morning.

I worked for you.”
Emily’s sobs grew louder.
“I know.

I know.”
He walked to the bed.
Stood over her.
His voice was a whisper.
“I would have died for you.”
Emily whispered back.
“I know.”
David’s hand hovered.
Then dropped.
He sat on the edge of the bed.
His head bowed.
The clock ticked.
The fluorescent light hummed.
Emily’s hand crept toward his.
He didn’t pull away.
He didn’t hold it either.
Just silence.
Just pain.
And a future,
Hanging by a thread.

David’s thumb moved.
A small circle on her palm.
Not forgiveness.
Not acceptance.
Just motion.
Emily’s voice was raw.
“What happens now?”
David stared at the floor.
“I don’t know.”
“We can’t go back.”
“No.

We can’t.”
Emily’s belly tightened.
A contraction.
Small.
Brief.
She gasped.
David looked up.
“What?”
“Nothing.

Just Braxton Hicks.”
He watched her.
“You’re sure?”
Emily nodded.
“I’ve been having them for weeks.”
David’s eyes stayed on her belly.
“She’s moving.”
Emily smiled weakly.
“She always kicks when you talk.”
David’s hand moved.
Touched the curve of her bump.
A tiny foot pushed back.
His breath caught.
“She knows your voice.”
David’s eyes glistened.
“She knows.”
Emily’s voice trembled.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.

Not now.

Not ever.”
David’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
“Then feel it.

Whatever it is.”
David looked at her.
Real pain.
Real love.
Real confusion.
“I hate what you did.”
Emily nodded.
“I hate it too.”
“But I love her.”
He pressed his palm flat.
“I love this baby.”
Emily’s hand covered his.
“Then fight for her.

Fight for us.”
David’s voice cracked.
“Us?

Is there an us?”
Emily’s tears fell.
“I don’t know.

But I want there to be.”
David closed his eyes.
Minutes passed.
The clock ticked.
A knock.
The door opened.
Dr. Patel entered.
“Ms. Emily.

Your vitals are stabilizing.”
Emily nodded.
“That’s good.”
“But you need rest.

Complete rest.

No stress.”
Dr. Patel looked at David.
“Can you ensure that?”
David’s voice was flat.
“I’ll try.”
Dr. Patel left.
The door closed.
Emily looked at David.
“Will you stay?”
David stood.
Walked to the window.
His reflection stared back.
“I don’t know if I can.”
Emily’s heart shattered.
“David-”
He turned.
“Give me time.”
Emily’s voice was small.
“How much time?”
David ran a hand through his hair.
“I don’t know.”
Emily lowered her head.
Her shoulders shook.
Her hands gripped the sheet.
David watched her.
Her crying body.
Her pregnant belly.
Her broken spirit.
He walked back.
Kneeled beside the bed.
His hand found hers.
“I’m still here.”
Emily looked up.
Her eyes red.
“For now.”
David’s voice was soft.
“For now.”
Emily’s contracture.
Pain.
Real this time.
She gasped.
Clutching her belly.
“Something’s wrong.”
David stood.
“What?”
“I don’t know.

It hurts.”
He pressed the call button.
A buzzer rang.
Footsteps in the hall.
Emily’s face went pale.
“David.

I’m scared.”
He gripped her hand.
“I’m here.”
The door burst open.
A nurse rushed in.
Then another.
Machines beeped.
David stepped back.
Watching.
Waiting.
Emily cried out.
The nurses worked.
The monitor screamed.
Dr. Patel appeared.
“Move.

Move.”
David pressed against the wall.
His heart hammered.
His hands trembled.
Emily’s eyes found his.
Terrified.
Begging.
David’s voice was a whisper.
“Hang on.”
She nodded.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
The curtain closed.
David stood alone.
The clock ticked.
The fluorescent light hummed.
And somewhere beyond the noise,
A baby fought to stay,
A mother fought to survive,
And a man fought to love.
